CIMES 2008

CIMES 2008 is the 9th China International Machine Tool & Tools Exhibition. It is held every other year in Beijing China.

They are moving the show to a new convention center, so about half the show is at the old convention center and half at the new one. Yesterday we visited the old convention center. Today we will go to the new one.

This is a domestic show. The international show is held on the years this show is dark. So I am a bit unusual here--a foreigner.

The military-looking guy in the photo? A security "guard". There are hundreds of them standing around the show. Usually young guys in ill-fitting uniforms. They love their uniforms here. In general, the more official-looking the uniform, the less important the job.

This is not a mini-lathe show. There is some big iron here. In fact, I have not seen any mini lathes as we know them, only a couple of pretty far-off variants.

But there are lots of tools here that we can use. The kind of booth we look for has a hundred variants on dial indicators, for example.

Some of the companies we have talked to are huge organizations with hundreds or thousands of workers. Some are small family businesses with 10 or 50 workers. But they are all run by good people that are interested in making quality products. At this point, some are just better at it than others.
